Frequently Asked Questions

POCKET - Can the OXX Digital Pocket be used as a Digital radio for the car?  (Click here to view)

If you purchase a simple headphone splitter, you will be able to plug a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable into one side of the splitter and connect that to your car stereo (if the stereo has this feature!), whilst using the other side of the splitter for the JAYS earphones that are used for the aerial. Your 3.5mm cable may in fact work as the aerial, this will be a trial and error test for the user and we welcome your feedback.

POCKET - I have broken / lost my a-JAYS One earphones that came with my Pocket- can you help?  (Click here to view)

Yes we can! - Please contact us on 1300 558 702 or email us at support@oxxdigital.com.au and we can offer you a discounted price to help you out :)

CLASSIC - What has changed in the March 2011 update for the Classic DAB+?  (Click here to view)

March 2011 - Recently the BBC improved their WMA feeds to vTuner who handle our radio stations in the 2009-2011 OXX Digital Classic. This 'improvement' actually took down the feeds until vTuner (Station supplier) and Frontier Silicon (Chip maker) and for 5 days most BBC stations were not working. The latest update 2.0.21.33366-22 has fixed that issue.

CLASSIC - How do i Enable Windows Media Player 11 UPnP?  (Click here to view)

A very useful link to assist with WMP11 and UPNP

CLASSIC - What changes are built into the June 2010 update?  (Click here to view)

Following user feedback, we have revised the operation of the backlight. The scheme is now as follows:

The 'Standby Level' options of Low, Medium and High are each a step lower than the corresponding 'Power-On Level' options. This means that it is still possible to select the very low (almost off) setting for standby mode where the radio is installed in a bedside location. However, it is now impossible to set the 'Power-On Level' so slow that it is difficult to navigate the menus.

Additionally, new code has been added so that a single press of 'Scroll/Select' while in standby will result in a few seconds of bright backlight for checking the time.

CLASSIC - How do the pause and rewind buttons work?  (Click here to view)

The OXX Digital Classic DAB+ does not have a pause and rewind function. It does, however, have the ability to share media from your PC or Mac via the Music Player mode. When using the Music Player mode, these buttons are used as follows:

I<< - Previous Track
II> - Pause / Play
>>I – Next Track

CLASSIC - My Classic DAB+ Radio is freezing in standby.  (Click here to view)

We have had some reports of radios freezing in standby mode. This appears to be related to the clock update feature, and only affects radios in certain locations where the DAB+ signal is patchy or interference exits. A software update is underway and will be released to all eligible radios soon.

If your radio has become unresponsive, please switch it off at the wall and then back on. The radio will restart.

Go to: Main Menu > System Settings > Time & Date > Auto Update

From the menu, choose an option other than 'Update from DAB' ('No Update' is best). If problems persist after 'No Update' is selected, please contact Technical Support.

CLASSIC - Why I can’t get any sound through the Line Out port, or it is distorted.  (Click here to view)

It might be because the volume knob is turned up or down too far. The Stereo Out port is not a ‘Line Out’ in the strictest sense because it is affected by the volume control, and is not at a fixed volume. This is useful for connecting headphones (it would not be possible to adjust the volume otherwise) but it can give unexpected results when connecting to an external amplifier or amplified speaker.

CLASSIC - How do I set up Media Sharing in Windows Media Player 12?  (Click here to view)

To turn on media streaming on your home network in Windows Media Player 12, do the following:
  1. Start Windows Media Player.

If the Player is currently open and you’re in Now Playing mode, click the Switch to Library button  in the upper-right corner of the Player.

  2. Click Stream, and then click Turn on home media streaming.

Turn on home media streaming won't be available on the Stream menu if streaming is already turned on.

  3. On the Media streaming options page, click Turn on media streamingIf you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  4. Click OK.

CLASSIC - I’m trying to add new stations through the Frontier Silicon website but the URLs point to .pl or .m3u files and these are not working.  (Click here to view)

The OXX Digital Classic 600 does not directly support .pl, .pls or .m3u files. However these files are essentially just playlist files which contain links to the actual URLs. You can find out the correct URLs by downloading the .pl/.m3u files from the radio stations website and opening them in a text editor (e.g. notepad) or a word processor program.

A sample.pls file is shown below:

[playlist]
NumberOfEntries=1
File1=http://radio.listentome.net:7500/

The URL referenced by File1 is the actual URL you should use when adding your station through the Frontier Silicon portal

Please also find a link to a Whirlpool forum where users are chatting about this.

CLASSIC - My Radio Stream keeps dropping out in Internet Radio mode. Is there something wrong with the radio?  (Click here to view)

Please Download and refer to the OXX Digital Network Troubleshooting Guide at the top of this FAQ page for more information on Internet Radio issues and solutions.

CLASSIC - Why is the sound from my music player is distorted when using the AUX IN mode.  (Click here to view)

This can happen when the signal is amplified too heavily. Try turning the volume on your music player down to a moderate level. Bass boost and loudness effects on certain players can also create spikes of over-loud, distorted sound. You may experience a better sound quality if they are disabled.

CLASSIC - When I listen to Internet Radio. Do I need to extend the antenna?  (Click here to view)

The Aerial is only required for Digital Radio and FM Radio, not for Internet Radio, whether you are using Ethernet or WifI (the Wi-Fi antenna is internal)

CLASSIC - What is Internet Radio?  (Click here to view)

What is Internet Radio ?
Internet radio has been around since the 1990's.  Prior to the availability of standalone Internet Radios units, Internet radio stations were only accessible by visiting the broadcaster’s website where this is usually a link to listen to a live broadcast or podcasts. This means that you need to have your computer turned on to listen to Internet Radio.

While this is an acceptable solution it's not really convenient if you just want to listen to Internet radio in the kitchen for example or in fact any other room except where your computer is situated.

With the OXX Digital Classic +, you can listen to over 15,000 Internet Radio stations & Podcasts without having to switch on your computer. Connecting the OXX Digital Classic + to your wired (yes! we also supply an Ethernet port with the Classic DAB+) or wireless Local Area Network enables you to quickly access your favourite radio stations.

To make this all possible, you will of course, need a Broadband Internet connection and you need to be aware that on to listen to a Radio Station on your broadband connection will use an average 30mb per hour* of your monthly allowance. However many Australian ISPs** let you listen to a good selection of Internet Radio stations as part of their unmetered (free) downloads
*Every radio station lets you download at a different bit rate causing this figure to fluctuate – check your usage ona  regular basis if concerned.

** Australian ISPs we know of who offer this service^ or similar on certain plans –

^Always check with your service provider to see what they offer you.

CLASSIC - Do you have a list of which NAS the OXX Digital Classic DAB+ can stream from?   (Click here to view)

Unfortunately due to the many different devices available we don't have a comprehensive list of all compatible NAS and Media Servers. The Classic 600 can stream music from any NAS or Media Server which supports the UPnP or CIFS/SMB protocols.

CLASSIC - Which Australian Internet Service Providers allow for unmetered Internet Radio downloads?  (Click here to view)

As far as we can tell, the following 4 ISPs offer this 'Unmetered' Internet Radio content - by all means email us at sales@oxxdigital.com.au if your ISP offers the same.

CLASSIC - Adding Internet Radio stations to your OXX Digital Classic DAB+ / iiNet Freezone  (Click here to view)

We found this useful information on Whirlpool and really appreciate user feedback.....

I though I would share this:
To get unmetered streaming, different URLs from the wifiradio defaults are needed as follows:
Step 1: Determine the freezone URL on an iinet Radio station:

Go to http://freezone.iinet.net.au/radio.html
Search for Station
Click Stream icon
For M3u save file and open it with wordpad and copy the URL
For WPA copy URL displayed either in the 'Allow Window' or in the Mediaplayer properties window

Step 2: Add station to Radio
Log on to: http://www.wifiradio-frontier.com
Go to 'My added stations'
Enter in URL and other information.
(Note that the order entered seems to be order they appear on radio's menu)

Step 3: Enjoy the radio stations quota free
On OXX select Internet Radio > My Added Stations
Select desired station and enjoy

Here are some I have already worked out!

CLASSIC - How do I use the Music Player feature with a Mac or other non-Windows system.  (Click here to view)

The OXX Classic DAB+ can connect to any UPnP compliant media server and access the music contained on it.

On Windows computers this is Windows Media Player 11 or later. At present the Mac OS does not provide built-in support for UPnP however there are many UPnP servers available for most operating systems, some of them totally free.

A list of available servers can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPnP_AV_MediaServers -

XBMC Media Center is one we can recommend.

Most servers work in a similar fashion and all you have to do to make them visible to the radio is to enable the UPnP server component in the software, add your music files to the library, and ensure that you computer's firewall is configured as per the setup instructions provided with the media server software.

Update 8/9/10 - We have used Twonky Server for Mac OS X with the Classic and it works very well - whilst not free its a reliable option - http://www.twonky.com

CLASSIC - How can I get Internet Radio with a USB Broadband stick and your Classic DAB+?  (Click here to view)

We get some enquiries from people using Wireless Broadband USB Modems who want to use the Classic DAB+ for Internet Radio via a wireless network.

You need a Wireless 3G Router to plug you USB Modem into and enable you to then create a wireless network

We have serached around and found this modem from Netcomm. A customer has recently advised it is simple to set up and 'just works'
A tip- watch your download limit as music can chew through your Wireless Broadband allowance , talkback radio is much more reasonable of course.

Netcomm 3G17Wn 3G Wireless N150 Router
Creates an instant Wi-Fi hotspot to share your 3G mobile broadband connection with multiple WLAN clients
Compatible with most UMTS/HSDPA/EV-DO/3G/Next GTM USB modems

EDIT - October 2010

Virgin Mobile has brought out a USB Broadband Modem that has its own inbuilt router and this solution also works with the Classic.

CLASSIC - If my Classic DAB+ (10/09 or later) is unplugged for a long period of time will it keep its setting in it's memory and keep the correct time?  (Click here to view)

The Classic's memory will keep its settings indefinitely whilst being unplugged. The time however is set by either the DAB station  / Internet station you are listening to or in fact manually , depending on how you set up your preferences.

CLASSIC - What is the Classic DAB+'s (10/09 or later) standby power consumption?   (Click here to view)

The Classic standby power consumption is less than 2W.

CLASSIC : Can the Classic DAB+ play Flash based Internet Radio Streams?  (Click here to view)

If a radio station decides to change it's mp3/wma/realaudio streams the Classic can't play flash streams, however most radio sites still maintain a mp3 or wma stream it's just not so easy finding the address!

VANTAGE - Will my batteries lose power during play if I also have the AC adapter plugged in?  (Click here to view)

No.
The AC adapter will power the unit when it is connected regardless of whether there are batteries inserted or not.

NB: Batteries should not be left in the unit for a long period of time (6 months +) due to corrosion and leakage of the batteries.

VANTAGE - What is the power consumption of the OXX Vantage  (Click here to view)

Standby mode consumption: <1W
Operational mode consumption: ≈ 2.3W (varies on volume and backlight)

DAB+ GENERAL - What is 'Event Digital Radio'?  (Click here to view)

One of the advantages of Digital radio (from the broadcasters & consumers perspectives) is that the technology alows forb 'Event' Radio. Since Digital Radio was launched in Australia, we have been lucky to have some great event radios channels - To date we have had a plethora of channels and no doubt there is so much more on the way.

  • Pink - To celebrate the music artist Pink's tour of Australia, Austereo had a 'Pink' channel whihc was on air for 3 months
  • ABC Moon- Coverage of the 1st Moon landing in 1969, using exclusive audio sourced from ABC Radio’s archives, listeners were able to relive, or experience for the first time, one of the most dramatic days in space exploration.
  • ABC Digital Radio presented ABC Woodstock - a special celebration of the music, and the mud, and the bad trips... but mostly – the music! The show started 15/8/09 and ran through to17/08/09 on ABC Digital Radio.
  • WSFM Plus in Sydney / Gold Plus in Melbourne, 4QPlus in Brisbane and Mix 102.3 Plus in Adelaide broadcasted nothing but Beatles tracks for the whole of September 2009 to celebrate the launch of the digitally re-mastred Beatles albums
  • 4BH launched 4FAB in Brisbane broadcast nothing but The Beatles tracks to celebrate the launch of the digitally re-mastred Beatles albums, commencing at 0909 on 09.09.09. 4FAB played each album back to back – track to track.

  • SBS have been broadcasting all of the Sydney FC matches in the 09/10 season.

DAB+ GENERAL - Where can I find a comprehensive list of all the DAB+ Digital Radio stations  (Click here to view)

Couple of options....

A) Head to the DTV Forum - Link - This forum is updated by DAB+ users, it is not official but has some very good information on Digital Radio and actual user experiences in Australia. We frequently comment in this forum under the user Jeloz.

B) Follow this link to the Digital Radio Plus website for the official station list.

You will find all a list of the Capital cities where you can listen to DAB+ Digital Radio.

The cities without a + next to them , shows the commercial radio stations who are simulcasting their existing AM/FM broadcasts on Digital Radio (Note SBS are not listed here but have 6 channels on Digital radio)

The cities with a + next to them , shows the Digital Only stations available in that city.

DAB+ GENERAL - Will AM and FM radio be switched off?  (Click here to view)

There are no plans at this stage to switch off AM and FM radio services. As there is an estimated five radio devices per home, listeners must be given time to change over all of their radio devices before any discussion of switch off of analogue services. In addition, planning needs to continue for the switch on of digital services to the rest of Australia outside of the five launch cities.

DAB+ GENERAL - Can I receive AM and FM on my new digital radio?  (Click here to view)

OXX Digital  radios will also receive FM as well as DAB+ Digital radio.  However you’ll be able to hear your favourite AM and FM stations simulcast on DAB+ Digital radio.

DAB+ GENERAL - Can I listen to Digital Radio in other countries?  (Click here to view)

Our radios supports both DAB and DAB+ Digital Radio formats. In Australia we use DAB+ but many other counties such as China, UK, belgium use the older DAB format. You should be able to listen to Digital Radio in any country that uses DAB or DAB+. However, you will only be able to hear the broadcasts that are available in your current location. In this respect, Digital Radio is similar to analogue radio.

DAB+ GENERAL - My area is supposed to be OK for DAB+. Why can’t I get reception on some or all stations?  (Click here to view)

The guide at www.digitalradioplus.com.au gives a good indication of the Digital Radio signal strength in your general area. However, some locations may still experience limitation of service due to local topographic conditions, obstructions, interference, or shielding by building materials.

Ensure that your antenna is fully extended and try moving the radio around the room, or to a different room. Generally speaking, having the radio up high, and/or close to a window that faces towards the transmitter in your city is generally the best option.
Remember that DAB+ Digital Radio (like Digital TV) provides a very good signal above a certain reception threshold, and little or no reception below that threshold. It is not like analogue radio or TV signals that appear clear, then degrade progressively though varying degrees of fuzziness before disappearing completely. This has two important implications.
  1. You are likely to receive a clear signal on your DAB+ Digital Radio, even if coverage is less than perfect – e.g. where an analogue radio would have slight fuzz. That’s probably one of the reasons you bought a Digital Radio.
  2. Even if you are currently receiving no signal at all, you may be only slightly below the reception threshold. Re-locating the radio only a short distance might give clear reception on all channels.
If you still are unable to get Digital Radio reception anywhere in your location,  The OXX Digital Classic DAB+ can stream over 15,000 Internet Radio stations (and Podcasts) from the internet via your broadband connection, including some of the new DAB+ Digital Radio stations. See your manual for more details.

If the problem persists, try another location (you were probably getting next to no reception in that spot anyway). See the point above. Once you find a suitable position, freezing should not re-occur.

DAB+ GENERAL - I get a '?' before some stations in my station list, and don't seem to be able to select them.  (Click here to view)

A 'Question Mark' before a station name indicates a station that is in the Digital Radio’s memory, but which can’t currently be detected.

This can happen when the Digital Radio has been moved from an area of good reception to an area with poor reception, or when a station is genuinely
un-available (for one reason or another) Run a Full Scan to try and regain that station back into the Digital Radio's station list.

To remove inactive or unavailable stations press the MENU button and go to the 'Prune Stations' option (available through the Station Order menu)

DAB+ GENERAL - What is DRC?  (Click here to view)

DRC stands for Dynamic Range Control. Is a feature that adjusts the mix of a track to make it sound louder. It does this by increasing the level of the quieter parts of the track, leaving the louder parts (e.g. drums) at their original level to avoid overdriving the speaker cone.

Should you use it?
Most audiophiles would leave it off to get a truer sound, but you might turn it on if you were having a party and wanted the extra power, for example. Low/High adjusts the amount of modification.

DAB GENERAL - What does DAB/DAB+ stand for?  (Click here to view)

DAB stands for 'Digital Audio Broadcasting' - It is a method for the digital transmission of radio signals for mobile reception devleoped by the Eureka project 147.

DAB+  (What we use in Australia) is an additional audio codec for 'Digital Audio Broadcasting' based on the new audio coding technology HE-AAC v2 (Additionally known as AAC+ or MPEG-4). DAB+ is backwards compatible to the DAB standard.

For more information on Digital Radio, head to our About DAB+ section.

DAB+ GENERAL - I couldn’t get any reception, and then my radio froze up! What is going on?  (Click here to view)

The OXX Digital Classic DAB+ is basically a computer (it’s actually more powerful than an average desktop PC from the mid 1990s). Anyone who’s ever owned a computer knows that if you feed them corrupted data, occasionally they freeze. Unfortunately, one kind of corrupted data (to a computer at least) is a poor quality Digital Radio signal!

DAB+ GENERAL : Can I get DAB+ Digital Radio everywhere in Australia?  (Click here to view)

Not yet. DAB+ Digital Radio coverage is limited to five capital cities at this time. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. For the most current coverage information, see http://www.digitalradioplus.com.au/

In the future, there are plans to roll out the DAB+ Digital Radio signal to regional areas and we understand that this is subject to spectrum coming available when the Analogue TV spectrums shuts down during the next few years with the final shutdown in NSW in 2013.

At OXX Digital we do have an alternative to let you access many of the DAB+ Digital Radio only stations as the OXX Digital Classic DAB+ is also an Internet radio as well as a DAB+ Digital radio.

DAB+ GENERAL - Can I listen to "Community or non-commercial" Analogue Radio on OXX Digital Radios?  (Click here to view)

Currently all Commercial (includes SBS & ABC) Radio stations are being simulcast on Digital Radio in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth. In addition each state has it's own roster of Digital 'only' Radio stations with many stations available in all states (ie. ABC Grandstand). (UPDATE MAY 2011 / Many community stations are now being broadcast on Digital radio across the broadcast areas.

Should the station you want not be broadcasting in Digital DAB+, our Classic DAB+ also allows you to receive Internet Radio which would also allow you to pick up any Internet Radio streams of an AM radio station if the station is streaming online.

DAB+ GENERAL - Whats is Bird Radio?  (Click here to view)

Occasionally when a station is in between 'Event radio' stations, they tend to fill in the airwaves with Bird Noises. This is a historical tradition that has come out the UK.

Read about it here : Birdsong

DAB+ GENERAL - What Digital Radio stations can i receive?  (Click here to view)

OXX GENERAL - Do OXX Digital offer the Pause & Rewind feature for Digital Radio  (Click here to view)

The OXX Digital Classic DAB+ & Vantage Radios do not have a pause and rewind function.

However , The Classic does have the ability to share media from your PC or Mac via the Music Player mode. When using the Music Player mode, these buttons are used as follows:

I<< - Previous Track
II> - Pause / Play
>>I – Next Track

This is something we are considering and in fact working on for the future for Digital Radio.
